I've rode three different shaft drive bikes (BMW R80, Honda CX-400, Intruder 800) and I didn't notice much difference in feel - maybe a bit more "driveline lash".

Mot of the major manufacturers have a big truck full of demo bikes that send around to major dealerships each spring. I test rode a Harley Sportster this way once - try phoning the local dealerships to ask when they plan to do this.
Most major bike rallies in the USA (like Americade, etc.) have demo rides.
I've rented motorcycles quite a few times - you can usually rent a Harley or BMW for $100-$150 US a day. This might be a good idea to get a good feel for a bike, but only the cruiser or touring style bikes are usually rented out.
Another question is: Is the natural progression from a Savage to a HD? What are the other bikes that fit the character of a Savage owner?
